A Shreveport teen is the city's latest murder victim, and a suspect is behind bars.
Police found the victim with a gunshot wound to the stomach in the 800 block of Turner Lane in the Cedar Grove section of Shreveport.
17-year-old Demarcus Jones was reportedly shot Thursday night while visiting friends at the home.
On Friday night, 17-year-old Almetric Curry of Shreveport, accompanied by members of his family, arrived at Shreveport Police headquarters and surrendered to authorities without incident. Detectives with the Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit were able to gather information linking Curry with Jones' death.
Following interviews with investigators, Curry was subsequently booked into the Shreveport City Jail, where he was charged with a single count of negligent homicide.
"My heart dropped. We didn't know what had happened," said Roshanda Caldwell, Jones' aunt.
Not only is the family feeling grief from the loss, they're also feeling confused, as they try to understand exactly what happened, and what led up to the incident that took the teen's life. Some family members say they've been told by witnesses it was an accident. Other family members were told that the shooting followed a dispute.
Witnesses tell police they heard one gunshot then heard Jones say he'd been shot.
His family tells KSLA News 12 they left the hospital around 4 a.m. and spent the entire morning searching for answers and talking to Jones' friends who were at the house at the time of the incident.
"We want the God's honest truth to come out because our boy was a sweet boy, he wasn't a bad guy. He was very loving of his nieces and to his family and it's just heart wrenching," said Caldwell.
