RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The General Assembly has approved broad new requirements when it comes to the identification you'll be asked to show when you cast your ballot.

This change comes just one year after the General Assembly over hauled what can and cannot be used as proof that you are who you say you are when you vote.

Now all of those things could be off the table and the only thing that will work is something with your picture on it.

The new standard was passed in the House of Delegates Wednesday on a basically party-line vote.

Republicans believe a photo ID, which they believe is easy to come by, is a necessity to keep people from committing voter fraud.

Democrats call it a "solution in search of a problem" and claim all it will do is put barriers in the way of people who want to vote, especially the poor and minorities.

Now the governor has the final call... and he is not ready to endorse the plan quite yet.

His spokesman told me he felt the changes made last year worked.

In a statement tucker martin said: "The governor believes Virginia's current system generally has proven successful. He will carefully review any legislation passed by the General Assembly on this issue."

If McDonnell decides to veto the plan, he would be separating himself from his fellow Republicans in a big way.

If he signs the bill, Virginia will join 16 other states with similar requirements already on the books.
