SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Do you cringe just at the sight of a scale? If so, you are not alone. In January, Domonique Benn put out a challenge for 12 people to "knock it off" with KSLA News 12. We got an overwhelming response, but we could only choose twelve people. We now have a group and they are all from different walks of life, but share the same problem: battling the bulge.
One of our participants, Tyrone Davis, thought he weighed 302 pounds until he got a wake up call when he stepped on the scale and weighed in at 320 pounds. Edith Allen thought someone was standing on the scale with her because she couldn't believe the number staring back at her.
Now the "Knock It Off" Team is ready to knock off the weight and the excuses. To help them accomplish their goal, LSU-Health Nutrition Specialist Dr. Dennis Wissing and Lori Panu, a Public Health student at LSU-Health have both agreed to work with the group for 12 weeks and track their progress.
Dr. Wissing says it starts with small changes. He said first start removing huge serving bowls and replace them with smaller ones. He added cutting carbs to 60 per meal, watching your sodium intake, and cut their calories by 200 per day. Dr. Wissing also told the group when eating out, get a take out box and take half of your meal home.
Lori Panu says exercise is key when trying to get fit. Panu went over different warm ups and walking exercises to get the group moving.
