Taking a cruise? Know your rights

Posted: Updated:

The Carnival Triumph ship is now docked after being stranded at sea for days, but if you plan on booking a cruise soon then you should know what rights you have as a passenger.

"I always strongly recommend it because you never know," says E. J. with Joyner Tour and Travel in Shreveport. She says the first step to protecting yourself is buying trip insurance.

Cruise trip insurance can cover trip delay, baggage protection, and emergency evacuations, but it doesn't say anything about if your ship ends up stranded at sea like the Carnival Triumph.

"If you are looking for the cruise liner to protect you then you are going to be very disappointed," says Attorney Joel Pierce.

Pierce says it is important to check your cruise tickets. The ticket will usually be a lengthy online document detailing what the cruise company is liable for if a disaster happens at sea.

Pierce says cruise liners like Carnival are not liable for mental anguish after a disaster.

According to Carnival, the passengers on the Triumph will receive $500, a future trip voucher, and compensation for their cruise.
