Shelby Carter, a Junior at Haughton High School, is used to moving around a lot. Her dad is in the Air Force, but when he was stationed at Barksdale she found a home in Mr. Kevin William's band.
"It's like a family here," said Carter standing in the band room.
Williams become a mentor to her.
"Not only is he an amazing teacher, but her puts in double the hours that a normal teacher would," said Carter.
Williams says he's always loved music, but in his 14 years as band director at Haughton High he's learned his class is about a lot more than learning how to play an instrument.
"To create an atmosphere where they feel comfortable and not like an outsider. They do something that they enjoy and learn something in the process. It's an extremely important thing I think for a youth today," said Williams.
His commitment to make his band more than just a class or extra curricular is why Carter and so many other have found a place where they belong.
Williams won the weekly Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence. The award comes with a $500 prize from the sponsor, The Kirby Kelly Law Firm.
