SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport Police say they had to rush into a West Shreveport home Monday night after a man there was attempting to set the house on fire while his grandmother was with him.

As many as 15 Shreveport Police units responded about 8:30 p.m. to the 4000 block of Melinda Street, where they were asked to check on the welfare of residents there.

A SWAT team had been called to help free the grandmother, who is the homeowner. But police say they were forced to act before the SWAT team arrived. They say the man in the house was trying to start a fire with a propane burner and a blanket.

Once inside, police shot the man with a non-lethal device, a bean-bag shooter, and subdued him inside the house.

The grandmother was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
