East Texans react to post office stopping Saturday deliveries

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

For as long as people can remember mail has been delivered 6 days a week but soon it will be 5.

Come august, no mail on Saturday will become a reality and East Texans are split on the matter

While people gathered for lunch at the Angelina county senior citizen center there was plenty of debate on the issue.

"I don't think it's a good idea, we've been getting mail on Saturday's for years now," said one man.

"If it will save them money, yes I think it is," said another man.

"It's not going to make any difference, their going to spend it all anyway's," said another concerned Lufkin resident.

Ed Sheeler is a retired post office clerk and has plenty of knowledge with how the post office works.

"I don't think it will make any difference myself, I think people will still go out to the mailbox and look for the mail on Saturdays, of course I'd hate to see them close on Saturday, it's been an institution for the general public to get mail six days a week," said Sheeler.

And the crowd at the Lufkin post office seemed to also be split on the decision.

"I'd pay attention a little more, but if it's going to save money then that's what they need to do," said one post office customer.

"It's going to make it harder on everybody because they can't get their mail in on time, I think they need to keep it open on Saturday," said another customer.

And whether you like it or not in august an empty mailbox on Saturday could become a reality.

Deadly virus threatens local crawfish industry

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
