Pistol-packing preacher holds gun classes for Texas educators

While President Obama talks gun control, one class in Texas has a twist on the story of arming-teachers -- a pistol-packing preacher.

As gunfire echoes through the woods of southeast Texas, a man of God preaches the gospel of good shooting.

"My name is James McAbee. And I'm known as the pistol-packing pastor."

That's right. Pastor McAbee is the instructor of this concealed handgun permit class. Today, his gun-toting flock consists mostly of teachers.

Diane Gallier, Nederland ISD Elementary school teacher, says, "I feel like I need to protect my children if it comes to that."

McAbee runs this class as a side business to his church duties. He usually charges his students fifty bucks.

But after the Sandy Hook Elementary school shootings, he said he'd offer it free to teachers and administrators.

"I'm not sure if guns on campus is a good idea. but I do know that students need protection," McAbee says.

Teachers, it appears, would seem to agree. About 150 educators showed up at the shooting range.

On this day, the star pupil was Jackie Boyd. The tight pattern in her target earned her a perfect score.

"Bad guys have guns. I think the good guys need to be able to protect themselves," Boyd said.

And if Texas teachers are allowed to have weapons on campus, many educators in southeast Texas will be armed and ready.
