Queensborough grocery store catches fire

A fire that started Monday night at a Queensborough grocery store is under control and under investigation.

As many as 10 SFD units responded at 9:16 p.m. to 2309 Alabama Ave., the site of Expressway Grocery. The first unit to arrive, Engine No. 8, witnessed smoke coming from both the left and right sides of the building.

No one was injured during the blaze, which firefighters put out in less than an hour.

Firefighters at the scene say the fire seems to have started inside the right front corner of the building where beer coolers are located. The building sustained moderate damage. An investigation of the cause is underway.

Expressway was last in the news back in October, when the owner of the store, Syeb Jaffri, 48, of Bossier City, was taken to a hospital after being shot during an armed robbery. Authorities at the time said Jaffri exchanged gunfire with the robber.
