LSU blew out to a 16-point halftime lead, but had to hang on in the final minutes to upset No. 17 Missouri 73-70 Wednesday night at the PMAC.
LSU (11-7, 2-5) shot 56 percent in the first half while holding the SEC newcomers to just 27 percent to build a 39-26 lead at intermission.
Missouri (15-5, 4-3) is still winless on the road in the SEC, after closing the gap to three points with just over three minutes remaining, only to allow Andre Stringer to convert a 4-point play off a turnover to restore the margin to seven points, 65-58.
Stringer scored 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range, while Anthony Hickey led the Tigers with 20 points. Johnny O'Bryant, who had 14 points, broke away in the final 30 seconds for a what appeared to be a clinching lay-up, but then added two free throws to extend the LSU lead to 72-68.
After a Phil Pressey layup, Shavon Coleman added a free throw for LSU to make it 73-70. Pressey of Missouri was the game's leading scorer with 25 points.
LSU travels to Mississippi State on Saturday.
