NSU women hoops fall to SFA in overtime

Stephen F. Austin held Northwestern State without a basket in overtime Saturday, while hitting half its shots after halftime to prevail 57-50 at Northwestern State in Southland Conference women's basketball.

The Ladyjacks (9-10 overall, 4-4 in the Southland) got 21 points by Daylyn Harris and 16 from Portia Roberts and outscored the Lady Demons 9-2 in overtime. Northwestern (7-11, 3-5) sank only eight of 15 free throws, including a pair of misses by Arianne Ausmer with 4.5 seconds to go in regulation, while losing for the first time in three games.

Keisha Lee and Jasmine Upchurch each scored 12 for the Lady Demons, who missed all 10 of their overtime shots and faded to 34 percent shooting in the game after making 47 percent in a first half that wound up tied 19-19.

"We had a rough day shooting and for some of that, you really have to give Stephen F. Austin credit," said first-year NSU coach Brooke Stoehr. "We struggled to get good looks coming down the stretch and in overtime, and we didn't do well at the free throw line when we got there.

"We had the game at the tempo we needed but we were not able to take advantage well enough," said Stoehr. "Our kids played hard but offensively, we had some rough stretches that were costly."

The Lady Demons lost for the first time in seven games this year when holding their opponent under 60 points.
Two costly droughts, in overtime and during 8:33 of the first half, were pivotal.

In OT, SFA moved ahead on a pair of Roberts free throws 41 seconds into the extra period, then got a three-point play by Antionette Carter at the 3:34 mark to open a two-possession lead. NSU's only points came with 28 seconds remaining on two Lee free throws to cut the deficit to 56-50.

Northwestern opened the second half with a  12-4 run in the first six minutes to open the first of a pair of eight-point leads. SFA ran off 10 straight points, eight on a pair of 3-pointers and a couple of free throws by Harris, to surge ahead 37-35 with 8:57 remaining.

NSU recovered to lead by 43-38  with 4:19 to go, then SFA got another Harris 3-pointer (she made 4-of-5) and another basket for a tie. Harris and Lee traded 3s on successive possessions, SFA going up by 48-45 with 1:18 to go and Lee knotting it at 48 just 20 seconds later, which is where the score stayed until overtime.

The Lady Demons go on the road next week, playing Thursday at Lamar and Sunday at McNeese. They are home again on Thursday, Feb. 7 against Oral Roberts in Prather Coliseum.
