BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Each year thousands of aspiring singers to try their luck at super-stardom by auditioning for "American Idol". This year several local musicians joined those ranks.

"It just seems really surreal to me. I woke up this morning, and I was like 'Oh, so that was all a dream? Oh wait, no it's not.' So I check my phone and I'm like, 'Oh no it's not,'" said Megan Miller, an Ethel native and former Miss Greater Baton Rouge.

Miller says she tried out on a whim. She says she wasn't even really familiar with the show. On the day of her audition, she showed up on crutches after being injured in a car wreck, and still managed to wow judges and win a golden ticket to Hollywood.

"Their expression and their kind words whenever I sang...it's just so amazing to just see myself and, in the future, be able to show my kids I sang for four mega superstars and they loved me," said Miller.

Baton Rouge firefighter Dustin Watts, who just tapped into his vocal talent a few years ago, won his way into the judges hearts too and a trip to Hollywood.

"Two years ago, the last person I ever thought I'd be singing in front of would be Keith Urban," said Watts. "I randomly decided to go audition for American Idol. I was kind of star-struck at first when I got in front of them, but they were real personable people and they made you feel comfortable and evidential they liked what I did."

Watts says since the show aired last night, he's already being recognized around town. For a guy who did not plan on pursuing a music career until recently, he has some words of wisdom for anyone else who is unsure about following their dream.

"You have nothing to lose. I mean you never know what can happen unless you just take that chance. That's kind of where I am right now. You know, I took a chance. You really never know what's going to happen," said Watts.
