TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
It's time to rock! Well, time to look at rocks, anyway. It's time again for the East Texas Gem and Mineral Society's Annual Gem and Mineral Show.
If you've never been, you need to pack up the kids and check it out. They have rocks that glow, rocks that look like food, rocks that look like wood and rocks that look like…well, rocks.
Everyone's in place and the table is set. It's time for a visual and tactile feast of the mind. You certainly don't want to take a bite of the rock food table, though. It just looks tasty. William Pattillo has been setting a table like this since 1983, and just to give folks a challenge he puts some real food on the table. If you can point it out he has something for you.
"I have a number of Pecos Diamonds. If you find the food that is on the table, I'll give you a Pecos Diamond," William promised.
Suddenly, I spent a lot of time at the table; more than usual. But I couldn't find the real food. I decided I'd think about it and rock on with Keith Harmon. For a nominal fee he'll let you pick out a geode and open it for you.
"Have you ever cracked one open and given one up that you really didn't want to?" I asked Keith.
"Too many times; I've had some real rarities. I've cracked one that had gold in it that I didn't get. I've cracked two with opal in it that I didn't get," Keith admitted.
Suddenly, he had an avalanche of customers from Brook Hill School. The money's nice, but the reaction is priceless.
There were many ‘woah's' from many kids.
A few tables over Sharon Sanchez has stuff that you wouldn't think would be worth anything, but it is.
"We have the petrified dinosaur coprolite, which is dinosaur poop," Sharon admitted.
"Oh, man, you touched it. That's really gross," I said.
Then, Keith got to cracking for me.
"Now you're going to be the first one to see it. Jamey, that is exceptionally rare. That is Mordonite. I guess you could call that your real Mexican Coconut there," Keith pointed out.
"Mordonite. So there will be mordonite?" I asked.
"Yes, there will be more tonight," Keith said.
After Keith gave up another geode he wanted to keep, it was time for seconds, and yes, I did find the real food at the food rock table.
But he gave me a lot of hints. It's so obvious, it's right there.
Right there at the food table at Tyler's Rose Garden, waiting for you to find it.
The show runs from 10a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission costs $3 for adults and $1 for students.
