LSU-Shreveport basketball sweeps St. Thomas

SHREVEPORT, La. - The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots dominated the first half of play with a 26-2 run over the first 11 minutes of the contest as the home squad prevailed at The Dock 85-69 over the St. Thomas Celts in Red River Athletic Conference play.

Victoria Smith, in her first game back at home since her injury, played stellar defense as she held the nation's leading scorer Hershiira Boone-Rodgers to just 15 points on five of 11 shooting. Boone Rodgers came into the game averaging 21.3 points per game. Smith tossed is six points tonight for the Lady Pilots while grabbing the game-high of 16 rebounds.

LSUS (16-3, 11-2 RRAC) placed four shooters in double figures with Sharde Henry leading the way with 25 points, 20 of which came in the second half of play. Jenna Diakos turned in her usual double figure game with 18 points while pulling down five rebounds.

Christy Willis nailed four three's in the first half of play boosting her to 17 total points for the game as she finished with five from behind the arc in addition to grabbing seven boards.

Point guard Meoshi Bradley tossed in 10 points with the jump shot as she reached double figures for the fourth time this season all coming in the last five games for the Lady Pilots.

St. Thomas (10-10, 6-6 RRAC) tried their best to get back into the game after the large deficit in the first half and they did as they brought the game within 13 midway through the second half as they connected for a total of 14 three-pointers out of their 24 field goals made for the game.

Maghen Lormand led the way for the visitors with seven three's and the game-high 27 points while Boone-Rodgers drained five of 10 from downtown to finish with 15 points. Amber Arceneaux-Francis was the only other double figure scorer with 13 points and had the game's only double-double grabbing 16 rebounds.

LSUS held their own from downtown as well making nine of 18 with Willis and Henry sinking the majority. The Lady Pilots shot 47-percent for the game while UST a slim 34-percent. The Celts connected for 42-percent from downtown to keep the game within reason.

The Lady Pilots will be on the road for their next contest next Saturday, February 2, at Wiley College at 2 p.m. The next home game at The Dock will be on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. against Texas College.

Strong Second Half blasts Pilots past Saint Thomas

SHREVEPORT, La. - The LSU Shreveport Pilots outscored the Saint Thomas Celts 33-9 in the last 13 minutes of Thursday night's to dominate the second half for a 76-56 victory in Red River Athletic Conference play.

Two of the three Pilots to finish in double figures came off the bench with Rodney Milum having a good night dropping six three-pointers to finish at nine of 17 from the field knocking down the game-high of 27 points. Tevin Hall had 11 for the Pilots and was a big part of the run late in the game as he pitched in seven of his 11 total points.

Brandon Davis was just as dependable as he has been since starting at the first of the month as he turned in his fifth straight double-double performance with only a dozen points and 19 total rebounds. Davis controlled the defensive boards collecting 16 defensive rebounds.

Saint Thomas (13-5, 8-4 RRAC) started the game hot with a 14-2 run over the first five minutes of the game until the Pilots regained composer to shoot 45-percent in the half and took only a one-point deficit into the locker room at the break (33-32).

After leading by double digits for a good part of the first half, the Celts only managed a lead as large as four in the second half as the Pilots surged past on their home floor. 

LSUS shot an impressive 59-percent in the second half to produce the large run and finished at 52-percent from the field. Not only did the Pilots produce overall but they crushed 12 three's in 28 attempts to finish at 42-percent from downtown.

The Celts was just 10 of 30 in the second half as the Pilot's defense clamped down to hold the visitors to just 23 points in the second half of play.

The next game for the Pilots will be at The Dock this Saturday at 2 p.m. against the Paul Quinn Tigers as the two squads will be raising Cancer Awareness as the coaches participate in the Suits and Sneakers Challenge as they will wear sneakers with their suits on Saturday afternoon at The Dock.

$1 from every ticket sold to the game in addition to 10% of the concessions will go to the American Cancer Society as the NAIA and the LSUS Pilots and Paul Quinn Tigers do their part in the fight against Cancer.
