Golden Apple Award winner: Cindy Bickham

BLANCHARD, LA (KSLA) - Cindy Bickham's classroom as Blanchard Elementary School has a stage and a puppet center, but she doesn't teach theatre.

"I stir the students' imaginations. Discoveries Unlimited is an enrichment group for those students who are so motivated, so creative, that they need that little something extra from the regular classroom," said Bickham.

The kids read different novels with Bickham and then explore different ways to understand the books.

"Acting is by far their favorite, and to me that shows that they have truly understood the book, and they get up there and the joy that comes through. I just go home smiling," said Bickham.

The kids say they look forward to Bickham's class because it's more fun then sitting at their desks.

"It teaches us that we can use more expression and that we don't have to be in a little crab shell," said 5th Grader Jada Bickham.

Bickham wants to use some of her $500 prize to buy costumes so her students can take their performances to the next level.

She won the weekly Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence. The award comes with a $500 prize from the sponsor, The Kirby Kelly Law Firm.
