Traffic alert: Wreck shuts down part of Ellerbe Rd

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A man who chose to drive his truck off of Ellerbe Road rather than hit an object in the road ended up shutting down both lanes of traffic and created a power outage in the area Tuesday afternoon, Shreveport Police say.

The accident, which occurred about 5 p.m., partially blocked traffic, causing it to move slowly at Ellerbe and Flournoy Lucas Road.

Sgt. Barry Beck explains: "He claims he hit something on the roadway, went off the roadway and couldn't regain control of his vehicle and decided to go into a ditch and hit a pole rather than go into the opposing lane."

Power lines were on top of the pickup when authorities arrived, Beck says, and thought that the lines were still alive with electricity. Police kept the driver in his truck until a SWEPCO unit arrived to cut the power off.

This means that there is likely a few residents in the area without power. The area could be affected for several hours because utility and power lines are down.

The driver had minor injuries and was not taken to any hospital, Beck says.

Drivers are asked to use Southern Loop as an alternate route.
