SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
During his Inauguration address President Obama addressed the controversial issue of gay marriage saying. "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law - for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well."
P.A.C.E., North Louisiana's largest gay and lesbian rights advocate group, said they were pleasantly surprised by that part of the President's speech. P.A.C.E. stands for People Acting for Change and Equality
President Obama has publicly supported gay marriage equality in the past, but during Monday's speech he included it under the same umbrella as racial and gender civil rights. P.A.C.E.'s Political Director, Adrienne Critcher said the speech makes her believe her group will see progress during the next 4 years.
"This is an exciting day for all Americans and especially now for those of us with gay people in our families. We feel like President Obama is inviting us in, and he's saying you're part of our family, and we're part of the American family. That means so much to us," said Critcher.
P.A.C.E. leaders said under Obama's leadership they hope to see the Defense of Marriage Act overturned.
