Agencies prepare for winter weather on roadways

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Trucks were loaded with sand in Ascension Parish on Wednesday afternoon, ready to roll in a moment's notice.

"We will have four trucks loaded with sand and if there's need for sand out there, we're going by what the Sheriff's Office says. They've got deputies on roadways checking out situation and if it's needed we will send crews out," said Ascension Parish spokesman Lester Kenyon.

The focus is roadways with high elevation or bridges, something there are plenty of in Ascension Parish.

"We're asking residents to be cautious," added Kenyon. "If they are driving on the parish roads, please take your time and don't speed."

The same advice comes from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. In Baton Rouge, state workers were busy prepping 160,000 pounds of salt and 3,500 cubic yards of sand or more than enough to lay down over a foot of dirt on the ground of Tiger Stadium.

"We're really beefing up our efforts. We are going to be monitoring it throughout the night and our priority is to keep those roadways open," said DOTD Communications director Jodi Conachen.

Roadways that officials hope will have as few motorists as possible, at least through the overnight hours.

"Obviously when ice is out there we will be as prepared as we can we'll close things as necessary but we do want people to stay home if they can and be careful when they drive, be cautious, pay attention and obey the speed limit and obey all rules of the road," said Conachen.
