BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

Pam Straub teaches Special Education at Sun City Elementary. It would be a challenge for many teachers, but Special Ed is where Straub thrives.

"They're so interesting. You might not think these kids can learn, but these kids learn so much, just in a different way," she said.

Her colleagues say she teaches them as well as the kids.

"I love working with her. I learn a lot from her. She's wonderful with the children. She's compassionate," said her teaching assistant, Robin Herrin.

During a time when education policy is changing quickly, the core of how Straub teaches stays the same.

"We just have to continue to love kids, and want to do this for kids, and realize that we're here for the kids. No matter what paperwork they throw at us or anything like that it's just because we love them, and we want them to learn, and we want them to do the best that they can," said Straub.

Straub won the weekly Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence. The award comes with a $500 prize from the sponsor, The Kirby Kelly Law Firm.
