Flu virus hitting hard in ArkLaTex

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Experts are calling this flu season the worst and most severe influenza outbreak in years. Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas are among the states hardest hit by the virus, and local pharmacies are having trouble keeping the vaccine in stock.

"More flu, earlier, in previous years," says Dr. Charles Baxter, LSU Family Medicine Clinic. He says there have been far more local cases of flu this year compared to last year.

The Center for Disease Control says 47 states are reporting serious outbreaks of the virus, including Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas.

"I try to keep my body in good shape," says Shreveport resident Bobbie Lacour. Lacour showed up to the Red Cross office in Shreveport to get a flu vaccine.

Many doctor offices in the local area have run out of flu shots, and pharmacies have also had trouble keeping the shots in stock.

Dr. Baxter says after getting a shot you may have flu like symptoms, but you cannot catch the virus from the vaccine.

Some symptoms of the virus include: deep coughing, fever, fatigue, headaches, chills, and sore throat.

If your doctor's office does not have the vaccination it is recommended to visit a pharmacy or clinic, but it is not advised to go to the emergency room for the flu vaccination.
