BIENVILLE PARISH, LA (KSLA) -
All lanes of I-20 in Bienville Parish are now open following several multi-vehicle accidents Tuesday morning.
The sheriff's office says the wrecks happened near Exit 61 (Gibsland) about 7 a.m. after five vehicles collided with each other in the westbound lane. The second accident happened moments later in the eastbound lane involving three vehicles. From there, more vehicles began crashing into each other with some drivers running off the road. Capt. Mike Jones with the Bienville Parish Sheriff's Office said the most serious wreck is at the Webster/Bienville Parish line where a vehicle rolled over. At least one ambulance ran off the highway into the median.
Capt. Mike Jones of the Bienville Sheriff's Office says there is still significant icing on elevated sections of highways and on secondary road bridges. The LA Department of Transportation and Development has trucks along that area of I-20 putting salt down on bridges, and sand crews are at work on problem areas on secondary roads.
He says the area is still getting freezing rain and cautions motorists to use caution while driving in such hazardous conditions.
Highway 154 and the Bistineau Bridge remain closed because of icy conditions.
Travelers are advised to get off the interstate and use Hwy. 80 as a detour.
