Arsonist sought after two Bowie County fires

The first happened around 8:30 Friday night.

Then, another about 5:30 Saturday morning.

The first blaze burned a small building to the ground. In the second, a trailer home nearby was destroyed.

The fires were reported late last week and over the weekend. Both occurred on property owned by the same person.

Now, a fire marshal confirms that they suspect arson as the cause behind both fires.

"We have received some leads, but we are not releasing any suspect information at this time. All of these fires are under investigation," Bowie County Deputy Scottie Taylor says.

"I'm frightened. I am very frightened, and I am very, very hurt," says Sheridan Turner, a Bowie County resident whose home sits next to the burned buildings. Turner lives in the Garland community southwest of Dekalb, Texas.

Turner says she is "very watchful. No sleep. Very watchful."

The burned structures belonged to the family of Ken Betts, who says, "The way we came up as a family and to see all this going on, it is just a very disappointment."

Fire investigators on Monday were back at the scene, trying to see what caused the mobile home and small building to burn.

"At this time, all we know is that they are incendiary or arson fires," Taylor says.

"I think this is going to be isolated to this one area right here in Dekalb on County Road 4251," Taylor says.

If you have information on these fires, call the Bowie County Sheriff's Department or Crime Stoppers at 903-793-STOP.
