DESOTO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Story time is one of the most exciting parts of the day in Karen Welborn's Pre K class at Stanley High School.
"Reading is one of the most important things that you can do for a child of any age, especially at this age," she said.
Welborn doesn't just read to her little pre-schoolers. She uses stuffed animals and props to make the books come alive.
"They become a part of the book, and they're going to remember it when we try to teach them recall and story sequence and all that stuff," said Welborn.
"She's an outstanding teacher. Very caring, very loving, and she has a passion for what she does," said Principal Carolyn Phillips.
Welborn spends a few thousand dollars a year on her classroom, and plans to use the Golden Apple award money to buy more props to go along with her story books because she knows if she can instill a love of reading in her youngsters, they'll do better in school throughout their lives.
Welborn won the weekly Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence. The award comes with a $500 prize from the sponsor, The Kirby Kelly Law Firm.
