Man killed in woods fire identified

The Caddo Parish Coroner has identified the man killed in an explosion and fire in the woods in  in Southern Hills late Sunday night.

People who live on Southland Park Dr. reported hearing a large explosion around 9:30 p.m. followed by several smaller explosions.

Shreveport Fire Assistant Chief Fred Sanders says firefighters responded to a woods fire in the 9300 block of Mansfield Rd. shortly before 10 p.m. That's directly behind the building that was once an Albertson's grocery store on Mansfield Rd.

It was there that crews discovered the burned body of 53-year-old Terry G. Smith. Southland Park Dr. residents say a homeless man known to them as Terry was known to set up camp in that area. Asst. Chief Sanders also confirmed that there is evidence of a camp in that location. However, he would not confirm whether or not the deceased man was homeless.

We also asked if the explosions heard in the neighborhood were a result of a camp fire igniting propane tanks. Asst. Chief Sanders would only say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"According to the investigator there were several propane tanks that were found out there at the scene, he said under preliminary investigation one or more may have ruptured," said Chief Safety Officer for SFD, Scott Wolverton.

According to Caddo Parish Coroner Dr. Todd Thoma, preliminary autopsy results have been received and the manner of death remains under investigation.
