Louisiana legislators praise Elio announcement

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Several Louisiana legislators publicly praised Wednesday's announcement of the purchase of the former General Motors Assembly plant.

"We are pleased to see a prominent business coming into the area and filling the gap left when GM closed," says Rep. Jim Morris, R-Oil City, who represents District 1 in which the plant resides.

Phoenix-based Elio Motors said it will produce a three-wheeled vehicle called the Elio and will create 1,500 new jobs by 2015.

"This is a great opportunity, not only for our community, but for the state as a whole.  Elio Motors will bring us much needed jobs and resources," Morris says.

Rep. Roy Burrell, D-Shreveport, who tried a prototype firsthand, says, "I was impressed with the Elio. In addition to the jobs the company will provide, I am excited to see our community gain a unique and growing business."

Rep. Patrick Williams, D-Shreveport, says, "Shreveport is a city of many thriving businesses, and we welcome Elio Motors to the area.  I believe Shreveport, and Louisiana, can generate much needed revenue, and gain national attention with a company, such as this, that embodies the type of transformational leadership needed to compete on a global level, which Shreveport is poised to reach."
