SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Throughout the year, KSLA has reported on a number of homicides in Shreveport. The total for 2012 -- 20, according to the Shreveport Police Department.

That the same number of homicides as in 2011 but lower than the number of homicides in 2010, 30.

Even though Shreveport's homicide numbers appear to be stable, every homicide amounts to a harsh reality for many people.

"Well, there's one and where there's 20, there's still at least 20 homicides somewhere where someone has lost a loved one," says Cpl. Marcus Hines, Shreveport Police Department spokesman.

"So, you know that seems to be a low number, but to someone, that 20 involves a family member or a loved one. So, there's always work to be done. We want to continue to do what we can to keep these numbers even lower," Hines says.

Meanwhile, in Bossier City police report three homicides so far in 2012. That's down from 9 homicides reported in 2011. The city will release its final number in January.

The lower number of homicides in Shreveport and Bossier City reflects a downward trend in homicides statewide, according to the Louisiana Statistical Analysis Center.
