COLUMBIA COUNTY, AR (KSLA) -

Special agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday morning near McNeil, Ark., in Columbia County.

Larry Pace, 60, of McNeil died after being shot by a Columbia County sheriff's deputy who claimed that Pace advanced on him brandishing a knife.

CID agents are preparing a file that will include an autopsy report from the State Crime Laboratory, along with other forensic analysis and witness statements. The file will then be submitted to the prosecuting attorney, who will determine if the deputy used deadly force consistent with state laws.

Columbia County authorities have released the name of a deputy sheriff who shot and killed a McNeil man.

Sheriff Mike Loe told The Banner-News (http://bit.ly/W54FeQ ) that Deputy Koby Schmittou shot Pace after Pace pulled a knife on the deputy. Loe says Schmittou is on paid administrative leave pending an Arkansas State Police investigation of the shooting.

Loe says the deputy was talking with Pace on Saturday when Pace pulled the knife.

State Police spokesman Bill Sadler has said Pace had been missing when the deputy saw and approached him.
