Be prepared for Christmas Day severe weather

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Santa has had a lot on his hands this Christmas Day. Tornado watches have been issued for several southern parishes already. As a precaution you should use these tips to stay safe. If you are in your home, have a spot picked out to hunker down in. The more walls you can put in between you and outside, the better. Stay away from windows. At the last resort, pull a mattress over yourself.

If you are in a car and you see a tornado heading your way, abandon your car and lay flat in a ditch. "You have to stop and get off the road. See where it's going. If it looks like it is coming toward you, you need to abandon the car. If there is a ditch nearby, tornadoes are not going to blow through the ditch. You need to hunker down that's a safe place. Not under a bridge overpass, actually the winds accelerate. Not a good idea. If you can drive the other way, but if not take cover anywhere nearby" Gary Chatelain, with the National Weather Service, says.
