I-49 in DeSoto Parish reopened after fatal accident

Louisiana State Police continue to investigate Friday morning's three-vehicle crash that killed a Virginia man as he traveled on I-49 in DeSoto Parish.

Troopers say Jonathon Wallace, 30, of Colonial Heights, Virginia was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a tractor trailer that had stalled on I-49 just south of Hwy. 175.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the tractor trailer, driven by James Castleberry, 42, of Queen City, Texas was disabled on the northbound shoulder of I-49. The crash happened about 6:30 a.m., when a Dodge pickup driven by Charles Mitchell, 29, of Emory, Texas ran into the rear of the tractor trailer.

Castleberry's pickup came to a stop, partially blockinig the right lane. That's when a Ford pickup driven by Larry Richard, 68, of Scott, Louisiana sideswiped the Dodge pickup, lost control, left the right side of the road, and stopped.

Troopers say Mitchell was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash and was seriously injured. Wallace also was not wearing a seatbelt and was fatally injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner.

Mitchell was taken by Life Air to a hospital. Larry Richard and his passenger, Troy Richard, 42, Edmond, Oklahoma were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and were not seriously injured.

Toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
