A suspect in the armed robbery of a Mansfield bank Tuesday is in custody thanks to a sharp-eyed Louisiana State Police trooper.

Just before Noon, police got a 911 call about a man acting suspiciously at the Capital One bank on Washington Avenue. He was gone when the officer arrived. Two minutes later, police got another call - this time reporting an armed robbery at the the Community Bank across the street. The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

Earlier that morning, employees at the Community Bank in Gloster reported a man acting suspiciously. Security footage from that incident was pulled and provided to DeSoto sheriff's deputies, which helped provide a description of the vehicle he was driving: a maroon Chevy pickup truck. They say the man also had a scar on his face.  A man matching the same description was also reportedly acting suspiciously at the Progressive Bank earlier in the day.

State Police Trooper Rodger D. Cason Jr. was in the area and spotted the suspect's vehicle traveling west on U.S. Highway 84 near LA 509 in Mansfield. Cason activated his lights and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The suspect fled a short distance and tried to get rid of the money. He ultimately pulled into the Brookshire's parking lot, where he was taken into custody.

The man has been identified as 22-year-old Evan Towell of Grand Cane.

Police say they contacted the registered owner of the truck he was driving and learned that the truck and a the handgun had been stolen from their home earlier Tuesday morning.

Towell has been booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center, charged with armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated burglary and theft of a vehicle.

The FBI was contacted and is assisting in a joint investigation involving Mansfield Police, along with the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office with assistance from Louisiana State Police.
