WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) -

East Texans are remembering a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense confirmed that Army Staff Sergeant Nelson Trent died Thursday in Kandahar after an improvised explosive device ignited.

Staff Sergeant Trent was a 1993 graduate of Whitehouse High School.

"He was in my wedding, he was one of my groomsmen. He was the one that picked me up when my truck broke down going to my wedding. So he was always one that you could call on, he would help you out," said Michael Metcalf of Whitehouse. "He died defending our freedom, so you know, you can't say anything bad about him. 227 He did what he knew he had to do and what he loved to do. He always talked about being in the military when he was in school and that's what he did."

Staff Sergeant Trent was assigned to the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team with the 36th Infantry Division, based out of Fort Worth.

According to Mr. Metcalf, he is survived by his wife and two children.
