BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Generosity is a prominent theme of the season. There are many making sure families around the Capital City have what they need to celebrate.
"Three coming at you," shouts one man to another in the parking lot of Greater King David Baptist Church. He's controlling the traffic flow at the churches Christmas box give-away.
There's a steady line of cars rolling through the parking lot. Church members pack cars with boxes of groceries and bags of fruits and vegetables.
"Our church family comes together every December and feeds 500 needy families in the community and in the church," said Tyrone Dunn.
Dunn and members of the Brotherhood Ministry started getting ready for what they call Operation Feed a Needy Family early Tuesday morning, when an 18-wheeler dropped off loads of food in the parking lot.
Giving away the boxes is something the church has done every year. And every year, they see an increase in need.
"From 200 to 500. We probably could do 1,000 boxes, which wouldn't be enough. But that's where our budget is right now," said Dunn.
Hope Ministries feeds families year round, but during the holiday their food tables are stocked with toys as well.
"We do gifts cards, stocking stuffers and we do toys for kids that are zero to 12 years old," said Janet Simmons, president of the organization.
They call it the Christmas Place and say 300 children will get something under the tree this year. A need they have noticed is rising as well.
Dunn says it's pride that stops some from asking for help. He adds, that's why groups like his are around.
"God is good all the time to everybody. We just want to be a blessing. It's a blessing to be a blessing."
