SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - Marco French has a special bond with his 5th graders at Claiborne Fundamental Magnet School.
"I think he's the most amazing teacher," said 5th grader Mireya Olvera.
"He's like a teacher that you would hang out with like a best friend," added another 5th grade student, Allyrica Williams.
French knows many of the most important lessons can't be learned in a text book.
"I'm about teaching the whole child. Not just here academically. Sometimes you may come in my classroom, and we're talking about life," said French.
He says for many students he is the only male role model in their life. He thinks it's important for them to see successful men.
"I think it very much so had an impact on me, being that my father was not in the house with me, and just my mother being there. My mother really instilled in me that compassionate side and loving side, and that's exactly how i am with these kids," said French.
There's no shortage of high fives or rounds of applause in French's classroom, and before they learn division or multiplication he makes sure these kids learn that they are loved.
French teacher won the weekly Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence. The award comes with a $500 prize from the sponsor, The Kirby Kelly Law Firm.
