Flu cases on the rise in the Ark-La-Tex

It is here, but the good news is, there are plenty of vaccinations available for influenza, or the flu.

And that's number one on the CDC's list of suggestions in order to prevent the flu. Health officials say the flu shot is the most important prevention strategy and now's the time to get it.

According to a report from the Department of Health and Hospitals, 5 to 10 percent of doctor visits in Northwest Louisiana referred to as region seven, are for influenza- like illnesses. These are cases of people who report having symptoms consistent with the flu but they've not been tested yet.

The numbers of these cases reported is in a range considered medium to high compared to the rest of the country. So prevention is urged.

"The most important prevention strategies are first of all vaccination, and the Flu vaccine is very plentiful and available to everyone," said Dr. John Vanchiere, the Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at LSU Health in Shreveport.

The flu season is expected to last one or two months.
