Nov. 22nd: KSLA News 12 Shop Local Editorial

This Friday marks the official start of the holiday shopping season. For many stores it's their busiest day of the entire year.

My message today is to shop local.

Whether you live in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Marshall, Texas or Hope, Arkansas do your best to spend your dollars in your hometown with stores and merchants who do business here and who live here.

Resist the temptation to make that shopping trip to Dallas or Little Rock. Avoid ordering items on-line from distant companies that do absolutely nothing to support our local economy.

For many local business owners, the Christmas holiday season is critical. If you don't spend money in their stores now…they may not be around next year.

Spending your dollars locally can have long lasting benefits.

The retail market has seen major gains in the ArkLaTex. Stores and shopping areas are being built daily.

You can probably find something for almost everyone on your list from stores in our communities...and make an investment in our future at the same time.

I'm James Smith.

Tonight at 11:59 p.m., KSLA's extended agreement with DirecTV will expire and they may drop this station from their lineup. We have been working hard to stay on their system, but they have simply refused to make a fair deal.

As we all witness the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, we are reminded of the responsibility of local broadcasters to serve those in need. And we're pleased DirecTV understood the importance of our local commitment and accepted Raycom Media's extension.
