A family of five safely escaped from their south Caddo Parish home Wednesday morning after it was consumed by a fire.
Firefighters say the blaze began about 6.15 a.m. at a home on Barron Road. The homeowner said he woke up after smelling smoke and hearing popping and crackling noise. He found the fire coming from behind his refrigerator and spreading fast.
The man, his wife, and three boys all got out of their home uninjured. The man did run back into the home when he couldn't find his wife, but she escaped the home through a window.
The homeowner said his house is a total loss and very little can be salvaged from the remains.
Mike Mackey, Assistant Chief for Caddo Fire District #6, said there were no nearby fire hydrants on that part of Barron Road and water had to be trucked to the fire. There were only three district firefighters on duty when the blaze started. They made an immediate call for help, and close to two dozen volunteers came out to help fight the fire. Caddo Fire Districts #3 and #4 were also at the scene.
Investigators will need to examine what's left of the home to determine what started the fire.
