Nov. 19th: KSLA News 12 The Homeless Editorial

November is Homeless Awareness Month. More Americans are homeless today than at any time since the Great Depression---dooming them to a life on the streets, in substandard hotels, and motels, and in emergency shelters.

4,500 people experiencing homelessness each year in Northwest Louisiana.

Even more alarming is the National Center for Family Homelessness reports Louisiana with more than 43,000 homeless children.

Last year, Providence House served 318 families, including 470 adults and 652 children. We received 3,400 calls for services but regrettably were forced to turn away 1,100 families due to a lack of vacancy, twice the amount from the previous year.

Ending family homelessness is possible but it will take long term solutions. It will take using our hearts and our heads.

What can you do to help?

Give where your passion directs you and give generously of your time, talent and treasure to end homelessness through local programs that participate and support the system of care in our community to provide long term solutions and essential services. Imagine a community where no family is homeless together it is possible.

I'm Simone Hennessee with Providence House.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.

Be on the lookout for kids. They seem to dart out from everywhere. They are certainly not looking out for you; so please look out for them.
