Pre-school students pay it forward

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

A group of pint-sized Bossier pre school students are leading the charge in a timely fight to help the homeless. Their classroom project at Sun City Elementary has now turned into a school-wide effort.

"We talked to the kids about helping the homeless with blankets, hats and gloves, " says pre-school teacher Shawn Gard. Students starting bringing in those items, as well as blankets.

"We have children that are in need bringing things for others who are in need. And I think it shows children have big hearts, too, "added Sun City principal Kim Tuminello.

One of those big hearted kids is Sun City kindergartner Eliza. She pointed out the blankets she and her mother donated to the school's Warm The Hearts drive. I asked her if these were her blankets. Her response: "These are my sister's."

On any given night, close to a thousand people are classified as homeless in the Shreveport-Bossier area. And this week we've seen multiple nights of freeze warnings across the ArkLaTex.

"They may not get the whole message, but they know they know helping others is what we want," says Gard.
