Supporters still fighting for Shreveport dog park

Posted: Updated:

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover still has not signed off on the agreement needed to start work on a dog park, and supporters still haven't stopped fighting for it.

Glover vetoed the project, but last month the city council voted to override that veto.

The Red River Waterway Commission has set aside $280,000 in funding, but they can't spend the money until Glover signs the cooperative agreement. He hasn't, and he hasn't given any indication that he plans to.

"Short of taking legal action, we can't force the mayor to sign that," said Councilman Michael Corbin.

The Shreveport Dog Park Alliance says they won't stop fighting. The director of the alliance, Cynthia Keith, spoke at Tuesday's City Council meeting to suggest starting parts of the park, like bringing water service there.

"there's no sense in wasting that money. It's just sitting there. It's ours. It's earmarked for the dog park. It can't be used for anything else or anywhere else. We may as well use some of it," said Keith.

Mayor Glover was not at the meeting because he's still in the hospital recovering from an injury, but we did reach out to him for a comment. All he said was that his position hasn't changed.
