ATLANTA (AP) - Republican Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah has defeated a Democratic challenger to win an 11th term in Congress.
Unofficial election returns Tuesday showed Kingston defeating Democratic newcomer Leslie Messinger with 74 percent of the vote. That's with 23 percent of precincts reporting.
With a seat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Kingston has become such a formidable incumbent that GOP lawmakers last year redrew his 1st District seat last year to add more Democratic voters - a move that improved prospects for fellow Republicans in neighboring districts.
Messinger, a Savannah business owner, hoped to attract women voters in her first political race but had little chance of spreading her message. Her campaign was almost entirely self-funded, while Kingston had more than $1.1 million to spend.
