La Tech's Dixon up for Doak Walker Award

Posted: Updated:

Louisiana Tech true freshman running back Kenneth Dixon has been added to the Doak Walker Award Watch List. The Doak Walker Award is annually given to the nation's best running back.

In Tech's 51-27 win over UTSA on Nov. 3, Dixon became the school's single season leader in rushing touchdowns. Through nine games this season, the Strong, Ark. native leads the nation in rushing touchdowns (20) and is tied for first in the nation in scoring (13.33 points per game) with Oregon's Kenjon Barner.

Currently ranked 30th in the nation in rushing (averaging 100.89 yards per game), Dixon leads the nation in rushing among freshman running backs and is second among freshmen overall trailing only Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel.

As Louisiana Tech heads to Texas State Saturday, Dixon needs only two rushing touchdowns to set the NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns in a season by a freshman. The current record is 21 set by Marshall Faulk (San Diego State) in 1991 and was matched by Virginia Tech's Ryan Williams in 2009.

Earlier this season Dixon set the school record for most rushing touchdowns in a game with his six scores against Idaho. That was just one score shy of the NCAA record of rushing touchdowns by a freshman in a game, set by Marshall Faulk in 1991.
