SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Early voting turnout in Smith County set a record this year.

Election officials say 50,567 people voted early for the 2012 election. The previous record of 49,373 was set in 2008.

"You know, the voters are happy, we've got more parking spaces downtown than we have ever had before and everything has been running really smoothly," said Karen Nelson, the Smith County elections administrator.

Many people in line Friday, the final day of early voting, said the upcoming election is the biggest in years.

"I think this is probably the most important election that I've ever voted in so I feel great about it," said Doug Cummings, a Smith County voter.

Administrators say early voting lines have been fairly short, but that does not mean longer lines on election day.

"We've got extra clerks that are going to be out ready to help so don't let that deter you from voting just go ahead and come out on election day if you didn't make it in for early," Nelson said.

If you did not get a chance to vote early, polls all across East Texas will be open from 7 a.m. To 7 p.m. On Tuesday.
