Natchitoches man's body found in home after fire doused

State fire officials have identified the remains of a 72-year-old Natchitoches Parish man whose body was discovered Monday morning in his home after his house caught fire.

Natchitoches firefighters found the body of Cecil Wayne Fortner while responding to a blaze at his house at 1544 La. Hwy. 1226. Fortner died just one day shy of his 73rd birthday, Fire Marshal Butch Browning says.

Firefighters say Fortner's single-story, wood-frame house was engulfed in flames when they arrived about 4:30 a.m. Investigators have determined that the fire "most likely" started in the living room, but they have yet to find out what started it.

After putting out the blaze, firefighters found Fortner's body in the living room. They say he lived alone.

Fortner's body was released to the coroner's office in Natchitoches Parish for autopsy.

An investigation continues by Natchitoches authorities and the State Fire Marshal's Office, Browning says.
