Texarkana, TX police warn of new phone scam

TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

The Texarkana, Texas police department is warning citizens of what it's calling a new phone scam that's arrived in the area in recent weeks.

They say most of the calls appear to target elderly citizens, advising a person that they have won a cash prize from Publisher's Clearinghouse. However, they say before any cash can be received, the citizen must purchase a "green" card from Walmart worth $500 and give the caller the number on the back of the card.

Police say that by the time the unsuspecting elderly person realizes something is wrong, they have lost $500 and there is no Publisher's Clearinghouse, either.

Police are reminding citizens that if they ever actually do win a prize, they will never be asked to supply money up front in order to claim that prize.
