TEXARKANA, AR (KSLA) -

Bullets riddled the Chapel Ridge Apartment Complex this past weekend, and before the shooting stopped, a 14-year-old Texarkana, Arkansas girl was injured.

Darmonica Bolden was visiting a friend inside the apartment when a stray bullet went through a window, striking her in the chest.

Melissa, a tenant at the apartment, says, "When I came back here, they were all on the floor. And I noticed two girls were on their knees and hands, trying to crawl out the room. And I noticed one was not moving. And it was Darmonica. And she was between the TV and closet, and she kept saying 'Momma, it's burning, it's burning. It's hot, it's burning.' "

Melissa says she pulled the teenager to safety before giving CPR.

"I said a prayer, and I told the devil he wasn't going to take this child. And I continued to do the chest [compressions] again, and I tried mouth-to-mouth twice. And the second time, she blew air into my mouth, so I knew she was breathing again."

Darmonica is now at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, where police report that she is listed in critical but stable condition. Her father said Wednesday that she has had three surgeries and is in stable condition.

"I think everybody would agree [that] when you have a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex, then you have got a problem," says Sgt. Chris Rankins of the Texarkana, Arkansas Police Department.

Police say there have been other acts of violence in the city involving young people, from both the Arkansas and Texas sides of Texarkana.

"We would definitely agree we are having a gang issue at this time," Rankins says.

Texarkana authorities say they have started a "gang unit" to cut down on the violence.

Police have arrested four people, including two juveniles, in the latest shooting.

Joedacie Smith, 19, and Joshua Kindrid, 18, both of Texarkana, were arrested in connection with the shooting. The two juveniles were not identified.

All four are charged with first-degree battery, aggravated assault, and terrorist act, all of which are felony charges. Police say the charges have been enhanced to include engaging in violent criminal group activity.

Police say they expect to arrest more people.

An investigation continues, and authorities ask that anyone with information about this case call the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department at 903-798-3154 or Texarkana-area Crime Stoppers at 903-793-STOP.
