Investigation into student injury has ETX teacher's aide out of a job

An East Texas teacher's aide is out of a job after an incident that left a 4-year-old student injured.

Alexander Norment received stitches after hitting his head on a filing cabinet in his pre-kindergarten class at Kilgore Independent School District.

He told his parents the teacher's aide flipped him into the cabinet.

"When I laid down and held him real tight he kept telling me, 'Mommy, keep me safe; the bad dreams won't go away," Amanda Norment said.

Amanda said her four-year-old son cannot sleep after receiving a gash on his forehead from the teacher's aide at school.

"We've interviewed a couple of the children that were in the class at that time. The child was being unruly and a teacher's aide was trying to gain control of the child," said Roman Roberson, a Captain with the Kilgore Police Department.

Alexander told his mother the woman became violent.

"He says she grabbed his left leg, he flipped, and he hit the filing cabinet," Amanda said.

The injury required a hospital visit and stitches. The Kilgore Police Department, Child Protective Services and Kilgore Independent School District began an investigation.

"The process is normally administrative leave or leave pending the investigation and that's usually a paid leave just to give you an opportunity to complete your investigation," said Kilgore ISD's interim superintendent Dennis Williams.

The teacher's aide, whose identity has not been released, is no longer with the district, but Amanda said the battle is not over.

"I will be pressing charges," Amanda said.

As the investigation continues, she said she is trying to explain to her four-year-old son that he is safe.

"I know I have to keep reassuring my child that I am fighting to make sure that he doesn't get hurt again, but how do you tell your child that he's going to be safe when I don't even feel that way?" Amanda asked.

Kilgore Police Department said depending on further interviews, this case will most likely be forwarded on to the district attorney.
