Tyler police arrest shooting suspect near Rose Stadium

    The fight over Common Core got hotter with dueling lawsuits. On Tuesday afternoon, The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) voted 6- 4 to join a lawsuit filed by parents and teachers against Governor Bobby Jindal. Governor Jindal's administration then filed their own lawsuit.

Tyler police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon near Tyler's Rose Stadium.

Tyler police responded to a call at 1:53 p.m. Tuesday in reference to a shooting at a residence at 907 Turner Street.

According to police, witnesses at the scene stated a white Crown Victoria pulled up to the residence and several subjects got out of the vehicle to talk to people who were in the yard. Police say that, at one point, the people from the car asked to borrow a shovel. After about 10 minutes of standing around, a black male pulled out a handgun and shot Christopher Demetrious Crockett, 28, once while he stood on the front porch.

Crockett was shot once in the left arm and was taken to a local hospital.

A press release from Tyler police stated that "several males jumped back into the vehicle and fled the area before officers arrived.  Officers located the suspect vehicle at Connally and Hurt Street a short time after the shooting."

"The occupants of the vehicle were transported to Tyler Police Department and questioned about their involvement in the shooting on Turner Street.  Officers located a .22 caliber handgun in the front yard of the residence that is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting."

Police say they are still investigating why the shooting took place.

"Really don't know," said Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer Don Martin. "That was kind of odd to the other people here. There was no argument that ensued prior to the shooting. They really don't know why he just pulled out a gun and shot him."

Upon further investigation detectives arrested Bennie Jewell Williams III, 20, of Tyler.  Williams was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and transported to Smith County Jail.
