Gamecocks improve to third in AP Poll

COLUMBIA, SC (AP/WIS) - South Carolina is among the top five in the AP College Football Poll for the first time since 1984.

The Gamecocks' 35-7 upset of fifth-ranked Georgia Saturday improved their standings from sixth to third.

USC is 6-0 so far this season overall, and 4-0 in the SEC.

The Big Spur reports the last time USC was ranked this high was November 10, 1984 entering a game against Florida State.  Joe Morrision led the Gamecocks to a 38-26 victory over the No. 11 Seminoles and South Carolina jumped up to No. 2 in the rankings the following week.

The Gamecocks are tied with Stanford for the fifth-longest consecutive weeks streak of being ranked in the Top-25, according to The Big Spur. Only Alabama, LSU, Oregon and Oklahoma have been ranked for more consecutive weeks than the Gamecocks and Cardinal.

No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon hold their spots at the top of the rankings. Alabama is a unanimous No. 1 again. The rest of Top 25 got a makeover.

Florida and West Virginia move into the top five of the poll after a Saturday during which nine Top 25 teams lost.

No. 4 Florida jumps six after beating LSU 14-6. No. 5 West Virginia moves up three with a 48-45 victory at Texas.

No. 6 Kansas State, No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 8 Ohio State also move up. LSU drops to No. 9 and unbeaten Oregon State is No. 10.

Clemson falls one spot from 15th to 16th despite a 47-31 win over Georgia Tech Saturday.

The last time nine ranked teams lost in the same week was the weekend of Oct. 18, 2008.
