Great debaters weigh in on the Presidential Debate

Posted: Updated:

With the first presidential debate less than 24 hours away, the conversation is heating up at Wiley College among professors, staff, and students as to how each candidate can win over the American people during the debate.

Wiley College is known for training some of the best debaters in the world, so much so, that the movie The Great Debaters starring Denzel Washington chronicles the creation of the school's first debate team.

"This is one of the most important debates in American history," says Political Science Professor David Whitehead.

Some Wiley College professors agree that each candidate faces a unique set of challenges. For Republican nominee Mitt Romney, it's being argued that in order to win the election he will need to show a more "likeable" and "relatable" side of his personality.

"Romney is going to have to prove that he is not an elitist and that he does not condescend to the ‘have nots'," says History Professor Lloyd Thompson.

But for President Barack Obama, experts say his challenge is finding a way to prove his progress, or defend his lack of progress in fixing the national economy.

"Hey look, I had a bad situation," says Whitehead as he explains what he believes Obama should say to prove his point. "Gaining power from the Bush Administration left me in a terrible economic situation."

For Wiley College graduating senior student Peru Greer, he is looking for the candidates to discuss the economy.

"I'm facing high tuition cost and low financial aid packages," says Greer. A layoff from his job sent him back to school, but he hopes the outcome of the election will put him back to work. "I want to go back into the job market."

Some Wiley College professors think the election will be won or lost with the outcome of this debate.
