HARRISON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A missing autistic child was quickly found thanks to the Harrison County Sheriff's Department's K-9 unit.

Around 2:30 p.m., Monday, Harrison County deputies were notified of a missing autistic child. When deputies responded to Roosevelt Taylor Road, they were advised that the child was last seen by his mother at approximately 8 a.m.

Because of the residence being surrounded by a heavily wooded area and being close to I-20, deputies began an extensive search on foot and by car, using the PA systems of the patrol vehicles.

Sergeant Best and his K-9 partner, Bruce were called to the residence and began a search after getting a scent of the boys clothing.

Around 4:30 p.m., Sergeant Best and Bruce located a scent track and found the child deep into the wooded area by the home. The child was unharmed, but hungry, and was returned home by Sergeant Best.

Sergeant Best has extensive training in tracking and utilizing his K-9 partner's abilities for drug detection and tracking of human scents. Bruce is a Belgian Malinois and is approximately 6-years-old.

Lieutenant Brian Hill said, "without the use of Bruce, it would have taken a much longer time to locate the child."
